Hockey, Wrestling, Girls Basketball Win Big While Boys Hoops, Swimming Lose

HOCKEY —Hartland defeated Waterford Mott 6-2 Wednesday at the , according to @hartlandsports.

It was a big win for the Eagles, tweeted @hartland sports, as the team knocked off the first place team in the Kensington Lakes Activities Association North Division.

Tyler Allen and Ryan Daavettila led the Eagles with two goals each, according to the Livingston County Daily Press & Argus. Max Landry and Nick Pleshakov also found the net, the article said.

The Eagles, now 3-1-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the KLAA West, head north to play in a holiday tourament in Traverse City next week. The first game is 6:15 p.m. Wednesday at Centre Ice Arena against Traverse City West.

WRESTLING — Hartland defeated Birmingham Seaholm 72-6 and Rochester Adams 51-16 in a quad on Wednesday, according to Michigan Grappler.

"It was a good day for us," Coach Todd Cheney told the Livingston County Daily Press & Argus. "It was a little easier than last weekend, but a good way to end before the holiday break.

The Eagles — which are ranked fifth in Division 1 by the wrestling website —  are now 8-1 on the season.

Hartland next competes 5:30 p.m. Jan. 4 against Lakeland and Walled Lake Central at Lakeland.

Tuesday

GIRLS BASKETBALL — Hartland won 75-52 over Carman-Ainsworth in an away matchup Tuesday where Eagle guard Baliee Maggart led all scorers with 22 points, according to an article in The Detroit News.

"It was a good win in regards to coming off a disappointing loss on Friday night," Hartland coach Don Palmer told the Livingston County Daily Press & Argus. "They're the kind of team that makes you want to play fast."

The Eagles, now 4-1, next play 7 p.m. Jan. 3 at Holly.

BOYS BASKETBALL — Hartland lost 53-41 at Milan on Tuesday, according to the Press & Argus.

Dylan Videto scored 11 points in a game where coach Frank Leppek said the team played hard for four quarters.

"The last game we didn't play well," he said in the article. "We played four quarters of in-your-face basketball and stepped up the intensity."

The Eagles, 0-4, hold their home opener against Howell 7 p.m. Jan. 6.

BOYS SWIM AND DIVE — Hartland lost two match-ups Tuesday, including a narrow three-point defeat to Novi, during a competition at Ann Arbor Skyline, according to the Hartland Swim and Dive website.

The Eagles lost 94.5-91.5 to the Wildcats while also dropping a contest against Skyline 113-73 as all three teams swam at once.

Coach Adam Wohl said Ann Arbor is a deep team while Novi's top swimmers made them a tough matchup while Hartland had some swimmers ill.

Still, there were several standout performances, including Scott Pelland, who won the 50-yard freestyle in 23.49.

"Overall a very solid meet," Wohl said. "(It was) a very fast early season meet and an even better barometer of where the team is."

The Eagles, now 0-2 on the young season, next swim 6 p.m. Jan. 12 against Brighton at home.

FALL SPORTS — Hartland Patch listed all the all-county award winners — some 25 — and included a poll asking .

Monday

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK — Hartland High School swimmer James Strandbergh and bowler Sarah Schmitz each were named Fenton State Bank Athletes of the Week, according to a tweet by @hartlandsports.

Strandberg, a senior, qualified for the state finals in the 100-yard breaststroke and was a member of the 200-yard relay medley that was only a second away from from the cut score. He finished in the 100-yard breast last season.

Bowling coach Ron Heck said Schmitz, a senior, is emerging as one of the team's top bowlers. She averaged 172 during recent matches last week that included a 201, he said. The team went 2-2 during that span, including close losses against top squads Howell and Brighton, Heck said.

"She's throwing a better ball and making her spares," he said.

From last week

BOYS AND GIRLS BOWLING — The girls team suffered its first two losses of the year in close matches against top teams Brighton and Howell late last week while the boys struggled as well losing both, according to coach Ron Heck.

The girls lost 16-14 to Brighton on Friday in an away match, with the Bulldogs needing three games more than 200 to edge the Eagles in the last game, Heck said.

On Saturday, the girls jumped out to a 10-0 lead against Howell during play at Whitmore Lake, but Hartland lost 18-12.

Heck said the Sarah Schmitz, Elizabath Glasco and Rachel Brewer all bowled well during both matches.

"(I) can't wait till next meeting with both teams," he said.

Both boys, now 0-5, and girls, now 3-2, next play Jan. 5 against Milford at .
