Tennis Defeats Howell 8-1

BOYS TENNIS — Hartland defeated Howell 8-1 Friday to end head-to-head divisional matches in second place.

The Eagles are now 7-2 overall and 4-1 in the Kensington Lakes Activities Association West Divison. Grand Blanc, which beat Hartland, is currently in first.

Next up is crossover play that begins 4 p.m. Tuesday and possibly be against Livonia Churchill at home. Churchill currently is second in the KLAA South.

CROSS COUNTRY — The boys team Friday at the Spartan Invitational in East Lansing.

FOOTBALL — Hartland on Friday.

Thursday

BOYS SOCCER — Led by senior goal keeper Kevin Forster's 13 saves including two penalty kicks, Hartland shutout Milford 2-0 at home Thursday.

"The second one (Forster) had in the second half was just a phenomenal diving save to his right," said Hartand head coach Andrew Kartsounes. "He had a fantastic night."

Torin MacGregor and Bryan Condra scored for the Eagles They also assisted each other on the goals.

With the victory, Hartland improves to 2-5-1 overall and 1-3 in the Kensington Lakes Activities Association West Division.

Junior varsity also notched a 6-1 win.

The Eagles next play Tuesday at Howell's Parker Middle School with a 5:30 p.m. JV game and 7 p.m. varsity tilt.

GIRLS SWIM AND DIVE — Hartland swimmers finished 1-2-3 in sweeping all 12 events in a dual meet vs. Swartz Creek at home Thursday.

Hartland head coach Maria Puranen said while the Eagles swam well and are having a strong season, the lopsided win was more because Swartz Creek has a new coach and the program is in re-start mode.

The victory improves Hartland's dual meet record to 2-1 on the season, a year that so far also includes a first-time ever win at the Fenton Relays on Sept. 10.

Puranen said a strong freshman class along with experienced upperclassmen, such as Erica Mehlberg, give the Eagles a good chance to improve on its 17th place finish at the state tournament last year. The team already has qualified for the finals in four events.

"(Erica) is kid of quiet," she said. "She leads by example."

Hartland next competes 9 a.m. Saturday in the Wallked Lake Invitational and face rival Brighton 6 p.m. Thursday at home.

"We've never beat Brighton head-to-head," she said. "We're hoping to change that."

BOYS TENNIS — Hartland defeated Pinckney 7-2 on Thursday as the Eagles won three out of four singles matches and four out of five in the doubles.

The win ups Hartland's record to 7-2 overall and 3-1 in its division. The Eagles play 4 p.m. Friday at Howell.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL — A comeback bid against Howell fell short as Hartland lost in five games, according to head coach Nicole Conely.

The Eagles lost 22-25, 21-25, 25-18, 25-20 and 12-15, and Conely said Hartland started slowly in the three games the team lost.

"You have to start fast running your system," she said.

Depsite the loss, Conely said several players had outstanding performances, including Hannah Gilford, Kathy Porta and Samantha Dibert. Gilford notched 14 kills while Porta had 11. Dibert returned 19 of 23 balls in.

In addition, Conely said sophomore Katrin Otis played welll with nine kills and seven blocks.

With the loss, Hartland drops to 8-9-1 on the year and 1-2 in its division.

The Eagles next play 6:30 p.m. Tuesday against Milford at home.

Wednesday

GIRLS GOLF — Hartland defeated Howell 184-228 on Wednesday as both teams slogged through pouring rain over the last four holes at , said Hartland coach Mike Joseph.

"The weather was a big challenge," Joseph said. "A cold front came through and we got poured on the final four holes. I was very proud of both teams. We were fortunate enough to win."

Rachel Byron led the Eagles with a 44. Other Hartland scores included: Brooke Kastamo (45), Claire Seekely (47) and Maggie Hogan (48).

With the win, Hartland improves to 2-3 on the year. The Eagles next play Thursday against Grand Blanc at Warwick Hills — the course that once hosted the PGA's Buick Open.

Joseph said the team has played there before but it's always special to compete on such a legendary course. He also said Grand Blanc defeated Hartland last week 186-192 at Dunham Hills and the girls are hoping to return the favor.

"The girls want to get some revenge up there," he said. "It should be fun. We'll be prepared."

BOYS TENNIS — Hartland's match vs. Pinckney was postponed Wednesday because of rain. Hartland officials say it will be played 4 p.m. Thursday at Hartland High School.

Tuesday

BOYS TENNIS — Hartland swept Milford 9-0 on Tuesday with all of the Eagles winning in straight sets.

With the win, Hartland is now 2-1 in the Kensington Valley Lakes Association West Division and 6-2 overall, according to KLAA standings.

The Eagles next play Pinckney 4 p.m. Wednesday at Hartland High School.

CROSS COUNTRY — The boys and girls teams lost to Brighton in their first dual meets of the season Tuesday at Huron Meadows Metropark.

Senior Ian McGinn won the race with a time of 16:10, but the Bulldogs captured the next three places helping them win 24-31. Other Hartland varsity times were: Sean Pengelly (fifth, 16:29), Alex Gietek (seventh, 16:46), Jareb Duggan (eighth, 16:49), Brendan Gavitt (10th, 16:59), Patrick Gavitt (15th, 17:54) and Tige Pennala (16th, 17:56).

Head coach Matt Gutteridge said despite the loss, the Eagles' times — with five runners under 17 minutes — are faster than last year.

"We're almost to the point where we ended last year," he said. "I don't think anybody on our team is content."

Similar to the boys' outcome, the girls team also lost to Brighton 20-40 in which Hartland's Avery Evenson won the race in 19:15, but Brighton snapped up the next key places, according to an article in the Livingston County Press & Argus. The article also includes a photo gallery of the meets.

Eagles head coach Mary Rinkus provided Hartland Patch the times for the rest of the varsity squad: Natalie Halonen (seventh, 20:40), Megan Skinner (ninth, 21:46), Anna Hense (12th, 21:46), Tori Graves (15th, 22:32), Taylor Pryde (17th, 22:40) and Denise Grezeszak (18th, 22:46).

Both squads next run Friday in the Spartan Invitational at Michigan State University's Forest Akers golf course.

BOYS SOCCER — Brighton defeated Hartland 3-1 on Tuesday, according to Patch User Linda Bowen.

Bryan Condra scored the Eagles lone goal in the second half to cut the lead to 2-1, but the Eagles to make no further headway and Brighton later added another goal, Bowen said on her Twitter account, @ljrbowen.

The team is now 0-3 in the KLAA West Division and 1-5-1 on the year.

Hartland next plays 7 p.m. against Milford at the high school.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL — Hartland lost in four games to Grand Blanc on Tuesday — 18-25, 26-28, 25-20, 14-25.

Head coach Nicole Conely said Eagles had an off night, with its top three players making mistakes they normally wouldn't make.

"We had uncharacteristically poor fundamentals," said Conely, who added that two players, Julia Ollearis, Melissa Summerfield and Lynsie Giroux played well. Olleraris and Summerfield both served at a near perfect percentage while Giroux had 12 kills offset by four misses.

With the loss, the Eagles are now 8-8-1 overall and 1-1 in the KLAA West.

Hartland next plays 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Howell.

Monday

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK — A volleyball player and two runners were named Monday as the latest Fenton State Bank Athletes of the Week for Hartland High School.

Senior outside hitter Hannah Guilford had an outstanding week for the varsity volleyball team, including 71 digs, 64 kills and 12 blocks while recording only 15 errors, according to head coach Nicole Conely. Guilford also recorded 36 servings points with five aces.

Boys cross country runner Ian McGinn earned honors after winning the Kensington Lakes Activities Association Invitational on Saturday. The senior's time of 16:18 won by 13 seconds and helped lead the Eagles to winning the meet as a team. Boys coach Matt Gutteridge nominated McGinn.

Junior Avery Evenson of the girls cross country team received recognition for finishing third at the same invitational. Her time of 19:31 helped propel Hartland to a fifth place finish out of 13 teams and faster times than last year. Girls coach Mary Rinkus nominated Evenson.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL — Hartland finished second at the Michigan Elite Tournament on Saturday in a tournament that was scored based upon varsity, junior varisty and freshman team performances, according to head coach Nicole Conely.

South Lyon won the event, she said.

The team next plays 6:30 p.m. Tuesday hosting Grand Blanc at Hartland High School.
