Where Can You Find Harry Potter Author J.K. Rowling’s New Book in Hartland?

Harry Potter may have vanished into the past, but author J.K. Rowling is still around, with her for-adults book The Casual Vacancy due out Sept. 27.

In Hartland, if you’re looking to check the book out from the Cromaine District Library, director Ceci Marlow says title is already in their catalog and the library already has 15 holds for the print book and one hold for the CD version.

The new book by the creator of Harry Potter is aimed at a grown-up audience and Marlow says that fans who loved Rowling's writing will probably enjoy the new book even if it's step away from the world of Harry Potter, but says it is hard for many authors to make that transition.

"Other authors have stepped out of their series and done stand-alones. But
fans tend to clamor for more of the series," Marlow said in an email to Hartland Patch. "Not too many--Meg Cabot, James Patterson, Carl Hiassen--make a successful transition between youth and adult writing in part, I think, because they don't take their fans with them easily."

According to USA Today, the story is set in the little English town of Pagford, and revolves around an election held after a member of the parish council unexpectedly dies. Despite the Miss Marple terrain, press materials describe The Casual Vacancy  as "blackly comic … Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty facade is a town at war."

Whatever the outcome of the new book, Marlow says the library will have enough copies to meet demand.

"And I hope they'll (readers) let us know," she wrote. "Did Rowling do it? Did she make the transition?"

More than 2 million hardcover copies of her first novel are set to be released simultaneously in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Germany.
