Suspect arrested after man beaten at tent encampment along the bank of the Kalamazoo River (wkzo.com) — Kalamazoo police arrested a 25-year-old man after a 48-year-old man was found severely beaten near the 600 block of East Michigan Avenue, with the attack traced to a tent encampment along the Kalamazoo River. The victim was hospitalized in stable condition, and the suspect is now lodged in the Kalamazoo County Jail on a felony assault allegation.
   

2. Crews clean up half-mile stretch of homeless encampments along Portage Creek (wwmt.com) — Cleanup crews are removing trash and debris from a half‑mile stretch of former homeless encampments along Portage Creek in Kalamazoo's Milwood neighborhood, after a city nuisance case pushed the private owner to act. Contractors hired by Plastics Place LLC aim to finish by Sept. 11, while the city plans a reinspection but has not yet set a date.
   

3. 'A labor of love': Kalamazoo affordable housing community welcomes first residents (woodtv.com) — A large new affordable housing complex, River's Edge Apartments near Gull Road and Harrison Street, is now welcoming its first residents in downtown Kalamazoo. Most of the 228 units are income-restricted, backed by city, county and state support, and include amenities like a fitness center, playground and live-work spaces. Final construction is expected to finish in October.
   

4. State leaders say new program needs time to fix literacy slide (woodtv.com) — State leaders visited Woods Lake Elementary in Kalamazoo to discuss slipping statewide third‑grade reading scores and emphasize that new literacy programs will take time to show results. Kalamazoo Public Schools, however, have seen steady gains over three years, supported by efforts like Read and Write Kalamazoo and expanded teacher training in evidence‑based reading instruction.
