📰 News we're reading

1. Kalamazoo leaders approve contracts amid two-way conversion (woodtv.com) — Kalamazoo officials have approved contracts for rail crossing work tied to converting Kalamazoo Avenue into a two-way road, with utility and signal upgrades already underway. Drivers should expect lane shifts in coming weeks as construction moves toward Edwards Street, and residents may soon get a chance to take home pieces of the uncovered 1905 brick road.

2. Breaking the 'stigma' of affordable housing: New apartments open near Kalamazoo River (mlive.com) — New River's Edge Apartments on Gull Road are now leasing in Kalamazoo, offering 228 units with most reserved for income-qualified renters and backed by city and county funding. Residents can expect modern amenities, riverfront access, and nearby parks, with additional units and live/work townhomes for local entrepreneurs opening in October.

3. Kalamazoo-area salons add security, stop taking cash following string of break-ins (wwmt.com) — Salon owners in Kalamazoo are tightening security and even going cashless after a string of at least a dozen burglaries targeting beauty businesses in Kalamazoo, Portage and nearby areas. Police say several cases in the city appear connected and they have a person of interest, while salon owners share surveillance footage, compare losses and trade safety tips through a private Kalamazoo Salon Network group.

4. No charges filed in fight at Kalamazoo food co-op (woodtv.com) — Kalamazoo County prosecutors have declined charges against a person involved in last month's fight at the People's Food Co-op, calling it a mutual affray after reviewing video. Police reports describe conflicting accounts and minor injuries, while ongoing governance disputes over control of the co-op now move to Circuit Court hearings this fall that could shape its future operations.

5. Kalamazoo County ranks 3rd among Michigan counties for 811/PRAC assisted units in 2025 (kalamazootimes.com) — Kalamazoo County ranks third in Michigan for 811/PRAC assisted housing units, with 78 subsidized units available for eligible low-income residents in both 2024 and 2025. These HUD-supported programs cap rent at about 30% of a household's income, with the federal government covering the rest, offering important relief for qualifying Kalamazoo County renters facing high housing costs.
