1. KDPS: One hospitalized after Kalamazoo shooting (woodtv.com) — Kalamazoo police say a 23-year-old was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries after being shot Thursday night on Fox Ridge Drive, marking the third shooting in the city this week. The incident follows two earlier fatal shootings, including one on the same street, and investigators are still determining whether the latest gunfire is connected to the earlier violence.
2. Commission OK's permit to repurpose former WMU sorority house to student recovery house (wwmt.com) — Kalamazoo's Planning Commission has approved a special use permit to convert a former WMU sorority house on Fraternity Village Drive into recovery housing for college students undergoing substance use treatment. Operated by Unified Recovery Clinics with WMU, the facility will combine housing, outpatient treatment, mental health care, coaching, and academic support for up to 32 students, with hopes to open by year's end.
3. Nurse Honor Guard of Kalamazoo County (southcountynews.org) — Kalamazoo County now has a Nurse Honor Guard that offers Nightingale Tribute ceremonies to honor nurses at memorials or near the end of life. Founded in 2024 by local nurses, the volunteer group conducts moving rituals with uniforms, a lamp, and readings, and invites area residents to join or request tributes through the listed phone contacts.
4. Maranda Weekend Fun Guide: Oct. 2-4 (woodtv.com) — Kalamazoo-area residents can pitch in this weekend at the Krazy for the Kazoo river cleanup, with volunteers fanning out across parks in Kalamazoo, Marshall, and Battle Creek to reduce trash in the Kalamazoo River. The guide also highlights other regional fall events, from ArtPrize festivities in Grand Rapids to Pumpkinfest in Zeeland and Holland's Fall Fest.
5. Video shows high-speed chase after Kalamazoo County deputy shot (woodtv.com) — A Kalamazoo County sheriff's deputy is recovering after being shot during a July traffic stop north of Richland, which led to a dangerous, high-speed chase through Kalamazoo Township and into downtown Kalamazoo. Newly released dash and body camera video shows the struggle, the alleged theft of the cruiser, and the pursuit along West Main and other local roads before the suspect was stopped and arrested.
