A Major Change Is Coming to the Kalamazoo Promise Scholarship (wearebattlecreek.com) — Kalamazoo Public Schools graduates will soon be able to use their Kalamazoo Promise scholarships at accredited four‑year HBCUs nationwide starting in fall 2027, expanding options far beyond Michigan campuses. The 20‑year‑old program, which already covers up to full tuition and fees at more than 60 in‑state institutions, is being hailed locally as a game‑changing boost for Kalamazoo students' choice and belonging.
   

2. Kalamazoo County tree removals spark backlash as officials seek legal guidance (wwmt.com) — Thousands of roadside trees are slated for removal along Kalamazoo County roads as part of a $35 million safety project, but resident backlash has prompted county commissioners to seek legal guidance and request a temporary pause. Neighbors and the Save Kalamazoo Trees group support removing hazardous trees but fear losing healthy, mature ones, while road officials defend the plan's crash‑reduction benefits and tree‑replacement policy.
   

3. From 100 feet up: Kalamazoo Public Safety describes silo rescue (dailydispatch.com) — Kalamazoo residents can be proud of their Public Safety technical rescue team, which rushed to Vicksburg to save a man stranded more than 100 feet up a grain silo with a broken leg. Officer Jake Vyverman and colleagues improvised a challenging high-angle rescue, working alongside Portage Fire and other departments to safely bring the victim down.

PT Weekend: Clarice Assad (yourclassical.org) — Classical music fans can hear performances recorded at Western Michigan University during the Gilmore International Piano Festival in Kalamazoo featured on American Public Media's Performance Today. The episode includes the world premiere of Clarice Assad's "The Spaces Between," played by Eighth Blackbird, alongside other concert recordings from major venues across North America.
   

5. Invasive red swamp crayfish found in Cass County (newsbreak.com) — Invasive red swamp crayfish, first detected in Michigan in Kalamazoo County in 2017, have now been found for the first time in Cass County. State officials warn these aggressive crayfish can damage shorelines, harm water quality, and outcompete native species, and they're asking residents to report any suspected sightings with photos or collected specimens.
