WMMT reports the five teens were inside a car that was moving west on West R Avenue near South 2nd Street when the car left the south side of the road and crashed into a tree.

A 15-year-old and a 16-year-old were killed in the crash, officials said, adding a 15-year-old and 17-year-old were in critical but stable condition, according to the report.

All five teens were students at Mattawan High School, which provided a statement to WOOD-TV.

"It is with profound sadness that I share news of an accident involving five Mattawan High School students that occurred this morning," Mattawan school district Superintendent Randy Fleenor said. "We are heartbroken to report that there has been loss of life."

Officials did not immediately release the students' names.

Investigators are still trying to determine why the car left the road and who was driving.
