📰 News we're reading

1. Lansing readers have clear favorite for region's quirkiest landmark (lansingstatejournal.com) — Lansing-area readers have crowned the low-clearance "Big Penny" bridge on Pennsylvania Avenue, just north of Potter Park Zoo, as the region's quirkiest landmark. The famously truck‑denting span beat out Meridian Township's giant shopping cart lady, Delta Township's gas‑station giraffe, MSU's Rock, and other offbeat favorites in a recent State Journal poll.

2. Michigan issues first-ever hemp license suspension over excessive THC levels (mlive.com) — State regulators have suspended the hemp processor-handler license of Lansing-based Loud Labs after inspections found products with THC levels far above legal hemp limits. The case highlights stricter statewide enforcement and ongoing confusion over hemp processing rules, which local operators say need clearer guidance. Lansing readers in the cannabis and hemp industries may want to review their own compliance practices.

3. MSU students react to increased police presence downtown (wilx.com) — East Lansing police have stepped up patrols, drones, and mounted units downtown for Welcome Weekend, aiming to prevent a repeat of last year's incidents near MSU. Students report seeing dozens of officers and mixed feelings about the heavy presence, while the city also stations a Neighborhood Resource tent to offer water and support to people out for the night.

4. Meet two essential dogs at the Michigan Army National Guard (livingstondaily.com) — Two specially trained dogs, Axel and Penny, are providing daily comfort and emotional support to soldiers and staff at the Michigan Army National Guard's Joint Force Headquarters in Lansing. Working closely with chaplaincy staff, they greet personnel, sit in on meetings, and help ease stress for service members who pass through the local base. Their presence underscores growing attention to mental health in the Guard community.
