📰 News we're reading

1. Project uses community input to guide tree planting in disadvantaged areas (greatlakesecho.org) — Lansing is using a $5 million federal grant to guide major tree planting in disadvantaged neighborhoods, targeting hot "heat island" areas like unsheltered bus stops along Michigan Avenue. City staff, a resident forestry council, and Lansing School District interns are shaping where new trees go, aiming to cool streets, improve air quality, and build a local green-jobs workforce.

2. After second death in fatal bike crash, MSP asks for help finding witness (wlns.com) — A Leroy Township bike crash that killed two siblings with ties to Lansing has prompted Michigan State Police to seek a pickup driver who may have witnessed the collision. Troopers at the MSP Lansing Post are asking anyone who recognizes the black-and-white pickup to call them, while the siblings' Lansing-based church community has rallied significant fundraising support for the grieving family.

3. Lansing Oktoberfest draws thousands to riverfront park (wilx.com) — Lansing's first Oktoberfest drew roughly 3,000 people over two days to Adado Riverfront Park for polka music and German beer. Organizers, who brought experience from Grand Rapids, say the strong turnout has them already planning for an even bigger community celebration next year.

4. Automakers enter energy storage business as data centers face backlash (journalgazette.net) — Michigan communities, including Lansing, have pushed back against large data center projects, leading developers to withdraw proposals in the city and elsewhere. As residents raise concerns about energy use, environment, and limited jobs, automakers like Ford, GM, and Tesla are expanding into stationary battery storage to serve data centers, while trying to avoid getting pulled into local political fights.
