1. Central Michigan University joins Lansing Promise to offer scholarships for local students (eastmichigannews.com) — Lansing high school students now have a new, more affordable path to Central Michigan University thanks to a partnership with Lansing Promise offering up to $20,000 in tuition support plus extra CMU awards. Eligible Lansing School District residents can qualify based on how long they've lived and studied in the district, but must complete the FAFSA each year to access the scholarships.
2. HeroFest Returns to Lansing to honor Mid-Michigan veterans and first responders (wilx.com) — Lansing residents can honor local veterans and first responders at the free HeroFest celebration this Saturday, Oct. 3, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Schmidt Community Center on W. Jenison Avenue. Families can enjoy kids' activities, vendor booths, and a chance to personally thank neighborhood heroes from across Mid-Michigan.
3. UM Health-Sparrow educates community on AFib (wlns.com) — UM Health-Sparrow in Lansing is spotlighting atrial fibrillation, the most common irregular heartbeat, by educating local residents on symptoms and the importance of early detection. Specialists at its Lansing facility stress managing conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes to reduce stroke risk and improve AFib outcomes for community members.
4. Union members rally at Michigan Capitol for local workplace control (wlns.com) — In downtown Lansing, union members and advocates rallied at the Capitol urging lawmakers to restore local control over workplace standards like minimum wage, paid leave and construction rules. They're backing legislation to repeal two state laws they say block cities from tailoring protections to local workers, arguing Michigan communities should decide what's best for their residents and public projects.
