Volunteers Harvest Fresh Produce for Metro Detroit Hungry at Boyka's Farm
The Boyka/Decock Farm Stand on 23 Mile Road in Macomb took part in Forgotten Harvest's Community Harvest Day Saturday.
Macomb Township was volunteer central Saturday as members of the local and surrounding communities headed to the to be part of the largest Community Harvest Day to date.
Led by Forgotten Harvest and several faith-based and community leaders, Harvest Days are being held on Saturdays from October through November. During these events, volunteers harvest fields of fresh and healthy food donated by local farmers. The food is then used to feed the hungry in Metro Detroit.
“Gathering so many beneficial organizations is the first step toward attacking the hunger crisis,” said Russ Russell, Forgotten Harvest's director of development, in a prepared statement. “To continue the fight against hunger, we’re going directly to the source, the farmers, and harvesting surplus food to help feed the hungry. It’s one more way we can help metro Detroiters put food on the table this winter.”
