1. Midland City Council approves yard-waste fee increases for 2027 (ourmidland.com) — Midland residents will see higher yard-waste sticker prices and increased police service fees after the City Council's Sept. 28 votes, with changes starting this fall and in spring 2027. Council members also debated selling the underused Larkin Parking Deck near Delta College's Midland Center and floated ideas to repurpose wood from the beloved Tridge as replacement planning continues.
   

2. Midland City Council declares Oct. 4-10 Fire Prevention Week (ourmidland.com) — Midland City Council has proclaimed Oct. 4-10 as Fire Prevention Week, with a focus on safe charging practices for phones, vapes, e-bikes, and other devices. Fire officials highlight recent smoke alarm installations and school outreach, and invite residents to a free open house Oct. 10 at Fire Station No. 1 on East Haley Street.
   

3. Southwestern Michigan woman buys $1 million lottery ticket in Midland (abc12.com) — A 61-year-old Van Buren County woman became a millionaire thanks to a Bonus Multiplier ticket she bought while grocery shopping at the Meijer in Midland. After forgetting about the ticket overnight, she discovered the $1 million win and plans to tackle home repairs and set up savings for her grandchildren, while millions in similar prizes remain statewide.
   

4. Midland Dow reloads and repeats at Tri-Cities Swimming Championship (mlive.com) — Midland Dow's girls swim team dominated the Tri-Cities Championship in Midland, winning 10 of 12 events and outscoring crosstown rival Midland High and John Glenn. Local standouts like Amelia Mularz and Vera Roberson led the Chargers, while Midland swimmers still grabbed several top-three finishes, giving city fans plenty to cheer as the season continues.
   

5. 'It's past time': Dam safety legislation nears passage in the Michigan legislature (wwmt.com) — New dam-safety legislation inspired by the 2020 Edenville and Sanford failures, which devastated parts of Midland, is nearing final passage in Lansing. Bipartisan bills backed by Rep. Bill Schuette of Midland would tighten inspections, upgrade design standards, and create a state dam-safety fund aimed at preventing similar disasters in communities across Michigan.
