Job Hunting Advice: Help with Relocating for Work

It may not always be the desired course of action, but sometimes it is necessary to relocate to another part of the state or country to take a job or to look for a job.

Chesterfield Township Library has books and online resources to assist job hunters who need to plan a move across town, across the state, or across the country for employment purposes.  

With a Chesterfield Township Library card, people can use a computer in the library or from home to log onto the careeronestop website – a powerful online resource provided by the U.S. Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration.  From the homepage of the library (www.chelibrary.org), people can access the website by clicking the link “databases”, and then clicking the link for the library’s databases listed by subject, and then looking for the category “careers”.

From the homepage of careeronestop, people can click on the link “Salary and Benefits” to find information to assist in researching employment trends by occupation and industry across states, as well as study wage statistics (by occupation) in different metropolitan areas of the country.  Other valuable information in this section of the website includes links to civilian and military moving guides, trip planners, support services, apartment guides, census data, and school reports.

Books available in the library to help people with the process of relocating for a job include “The Insiders’ Guide to Relocation: Expert Advice to Move across the State, the Country or the World” by Beverly Roman and John Howells; and a reference book titled “Profiles of Michigan.”

The book by Roman and Howells will help lessen the stress of moving by presenting practical information on topics such as relocating to find work, organizing a move, negotiating a profitable home sale, housing options, and how to settle into a community, among other subjects.

If a person is relocating to any community in Michigan, the “Profiles of Michigan” book will provide the history, statistics, and demographics for more than 2,000 populated places (plus 83 counties) in the state.  In these pages a person can get a snapshot of the local economy, taxes per capita, median home value, crime rate, as well as contact information for schools, local government offices, and the chamber of commerce for individual communities statewide.

The Chesterfield Township Library is located at 50560 Patricia Avenue off Chesterfield Road in the Gratiot and 23 Mile Road area.  The library is open 10 a.m.-8 p.m., Monday through Thursday, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Fridays, and from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturdays.
