At the Farmers Market: More Than Just Shopping!
Our Market is a very busy place for shopping, and much more!
In spite of the worst drought in 50 years this summer, the Market is overflowing with a bountiful harvest of Michigan grown produce. Customers are filling their bags and baskets with sweet corn, melons, salad greens, tomatoes, berries and much more. They linger to browse and buy other foods such as bakery, honey, maple syrup, and cheese, then are tempted by artisans and crafters with unique items for sale.
Not only is our farmers market a great place for shopping, meeting a friend for lunch, or greeting your neighbors, it is an educational opportunity for many.
Our CHEFS AT THE MARKET series provides the opportunity for everyone to learn a new recipe, new cooking techniques, taste new herbs, spices and seasonings. Sept. 13 is the next session, at 9:00 AM with The Rusty Bucket.

Last week, there was the opportunity to watch two different film crews on site. Our Market provided the focus of a documentary on developmentally disabled adults and how they can function in the community. The "stars" of this film shopped , examined fresh fruits and vegetables, discussed what to cook, paid, were interviewed, filmed,---and had a great time at the Market.
The second camera crew filmed an interview with Steve Karpo of Karpo Farms regarding the failure of the Michigan fruit crop this year. The goal of this is to inform everyone of the issue, and to encourage shoppers to support our Michigan growers as much as possible. Viewing of this piece will be announced soon.

The third educational event at the Market last week was bright and noisy as 40 middle school students in orange camp T-shirts arrived from Adrian by bus for a field trip. This group was from Lenawee Intermediate School District's Carreer Exploration Camp. The students were in a "Farm to Table" unit, exploring where our food comes from. They spent the day learning about new varieites of veggies, working on a Market scavenger hunt, interviewing vendor about their jobs, buying produce to take home for a cooking class, and of course---eating lots of kettle corn!
So, see you at the Market--a very busy place!
