At the Farmers' Market: Thanks-Giving

Peppers, corn, tomatoes, melons, potatoes...the list goes on and on...

As a community, you donated all this and much more fresh produce to Northville Civic Concern this summer. Under the guidance of Lynn Parkllan and the Master Gardeners, our 2012 "Donate Fresh Produce to Civic Concern" project at the Farmers Market doubled the amount of produce we were able to give to needy families in 2011. 

Your generosity was amazing! Backyard gardeners came with bags of salad greens and tomatoes. Would-be farmers with community garden plots came with boxes of tomatoes, peppers and onions. Market shoppers bought extra produce for the bins.  A high school student unloaded a wagonful of produce from his first garden. An elderly couple slipped us a twenty dollar bill and asked us to pick out what was needed.  A 4-year-old lugged over a watermelon that he picked out himself to give to "some kids who would like it." Kapnick Orchards and Donahee Farms (located in Northville Twp.) were generous givers.  Our donation bins overflowed!

A thanks to the dependable volunteers who picked up produce each week to deliver to Civic Concern, Friends of the Market volunteers who set up the display & bins every week, and posted the reminder signs, and Lynn and her Gardeners who did all the organization and publicity for the project.

Your kind donations of fresh, wonderful produce every Thursday has helped our clients in many ways.  While we are able to help serve needy individuals and families in our area by providing staples and canned goods, the blessing of fresh vegetables and fruit is a healthy addition and a very special treat!The dollars the clients are able to save help them purchase gas or pay a utility bill or purchase other needed groceries.

Know that you have made a difference in our community and we appreciate all you have done this season.

The Farmers Market doesn't close until Oct. 25, but the donation program has ended for this year. Northville, your generosity was astounding, and I offer a huge thank you to everyone who contributed.

This winter when you snuggle up with the garden and seed catalogs, keep us in mind and plan to plant just a little extra to make a big difference!
