Home Insurance vs. Flood Insurance

With all the rain these past few days, our agency has had a lot of calls and questions about Home Insurance coverage and Flood Insurance.

The typical home insurance policy does NOT provide coverage for flood damage, as this is handled by FEMA and the NFIP. Most of Michigan is not located in a flood zone, so some of us do not always think about flood coverage for our homes.

But, most home insurance policies can provide coverage for water damage from a sewer or drain back-up, so ask your insurance agent if this can be added to your policy.

Flood and water damage to your home can be costly and frustrating, so knowing your current coverage limits and terms is very important.
