Northville Cubs Win Thriller

Northville Cubs baseball

It wasn’t a beautifully played baseball game, but the Northville Cubs found a way to win in a walk-off thriller Wednesday night against South Lyon Thunder.

Robert Ujkaj’s hard hit ground ball drove in Owen Marshall for the winning run in the bottom of the seventh after the two teams were knotted at seven.

“We did not play well,” said Coach Jim Marshall. “But, I love the way our team picks each other up and finds a way to win. A lot of players came up big when it mattered.”

Jacob Moody had an impressive two-way performance with four strong innings on the mound and two solid hits and a walk in his three plate appearances. Moody gave up one run to keep the Cubs in the game after they fell behind 3-0 in the top of the first.

The Cubs had to battle back all game after falling behind 4-2. They plated three runs in the third inning to take the lead. Alex Gaft’s single drove in Matt Whitcomb. Aram Shahrigian followed Gaft with an RBI double before Moody finished the scoring with an RBI single.

South Lyon took the lead back 7-6 in the top of the sixth inning but the Cubs tied it up in the bottom half when Michael Lionas’ sacrifice fly brought in Moody, who had doubled earlier in the inning.

In the bottom of the seventh, Marshall coaxed a walk and went to second on a wild pitch. A solid line drive single by Whitcomb got Marshall to third before Ujkaj drove him in for the walk off win.

The 13U Cubs are now 2-0 in the KVBSA travel league. The Cubs are proudly sponsored by both the Northville Sports Den and the Michigan Credit Union League.
