Wedding Cake Etiquette

Tips on cutting your wedding cake

There is a certain protocol that is involved in most aspects of a wedding. This is also true for the cutting of your cake. It is one of the first actions the couple will share in as husband and wife. Here is a list to follow on cake etiquette:

  • The wedding cake should always be displayed on a decorated table in the front or on the main table
  • The knife to be used to cut the cake should already be placed on the table
  • The cake should be cut at the proper time during the reception- For informal receptions cut it after guest have been received and toasts have been made. For formal receptions cut it after dinner is served
  • An announcement that the cake is to be cut should always been announced before hand that way guests can make sure to view it
  • The bride should hold the knife with her right hand with the grooms right hand covering hers to make the cut
  • The first slice should be fed by the groom to the bride and second bite the bride to the groom
  • After the cutting of the cake and the bride and grooms first bites, a member of the family or catering service should cut the serving slices, this should not be done in front of the guests
  • The cake is served and should be offered with coffee or tea.  If you choose not to have a cake at your reception, choose another dessert you can share with each other to start the beginning of your new life as husband and wife.
