Detroit Country Day School Honors 35 Senior Students at Prestigious Scholar-Athlete Award Dinner
Rich Strenger, former Detroit Lions player served as keynote speaker

Detroit Country Day School (DCDS) recognized 35 students from the Class of 2017 for their outstanding achievements in both academics and athletics during the annual Scholar-Athlete Award Dinner held at The Reserve in Birmingham, Mich. DCDS Headmaster Glen Shilling made the announcement.
This year’s event featured special guest speaker Rich Strenger, former All-Big Ten American football offensive tackle, who played for the University of Michigan Wolverines (1980–1982) and Detroit Lions (1983–1987). Strenger is now an attorney living in Lake Orion.
“The Scholar-Athlete award recognizes notable student accomplishments in two of the three educational pillars at DCDS, which include academics, athletics, and the arts,” said Shilling. “Each student has worked hard to balance a challenging academic course load while engaging on one or more of the school’s competitive athletic teams. Our mission is to help students grow into well-rounded individuals and the entire DCDS community is very proud to recognize this year’s class of scholar-athletes.”

The Scholar-Athlete Award Dinner is sponsored by the Blue & Gold Club, a parent volunteer organization that supports the athletic programs and physical education activities of DCDS students, and is dedicated to improving and enhancing student opportunities and facilities for these programs.
Each senior student who earned the Scholar-Athlete Award was nominated by a coach and was required to submit a resume highlighting academic and athletic honors, and a personal essay. The students also had to have earned at least two varsity letters in one or more sports and a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0. This year’s scholar-athletes were selected through a panel review of each candidate’s credentials. The Scholar-Athlete Award recipients from the Class of 2017 include:
