Detroit Gets Dissed on Another List

Detroit's been down, but it's not out. And it doesn't need a stinkin' list of who's pretty and who's not to know it's pretty darned cool.

Shinola is cool, but it’s not the only neat thing about Detroit, which got kicked hard in the Travel + Leisure website’s ranking of America’s Most and Least Attractive People. (Photo courtesy of Shinola)

Cheer up, Detroiters. You may not be pretty, but you’re hip.

That’s according to the Travel + Leisure website, which ranked the Motor City as No. 1 for having the least attractive people in the country on its ridiculous (someone had to say it) ranking of America’s Most and Least Attractive people.

But that’s OK.

To make the list, part of T+L’s annual America’s Favorite Places reader survey, bling counted for a lot. So did wealth and snobbiness. That we deduce by looking at the qualities that again made Miami No. 1 on the most-attractive side of the list and Tampa as No. 10.

There’s no to need to kick Florida sand in Detroit’s face. T+L did try to throw Detroit a bone with a backhanded compliment along the lines of “you don’t sweat much for a fat person”:

“Motor City clearly did not wow voters with its looks, but it made an impression for its cool edge, ranking in the top 20 cities for hipsters. You can find them in the Midtown area, embracing the made-in-America aesthetic at shops like Shinola, known for its bicycles, watches, and leather goods. Detroit also won approval for its pizza, often served in a square shape, as at Buddy’s, a fixture at the corner of Conant and Six Mile roads.”

That’s it? That’s all that’s cool about Detroit? Shinola and pizza?

What about Detroit having the chutzpah to pull itself out of bankruptcy? Could those overly tanned Floridians accomplish the same? And speaking of that, did wrinkled Florida win its rankings during spring break week?

What about the Woodward Dream Cruise, the multi-city celebration of the American automobile, or the Detroit International Jazz Festival, the largest in the country? What about the Motown legacy? The Detroit Institute of Arts? The Detroit Eastern Market? There’s so much more.

So take that, T+L. Detroiters don’t need your stinkin’ list to know they’re pretty darned cool.
