During the War of 1812 the United States fought the British Empire on the high seas, on the Great Lakes, and in the frontier outposts of Michigan. The British invasion that left Washington, DC in flames was finally repelled at Fort McHenry, an event that inspired Francis Scott Key to write, “The Star Spangled Banner.”
