This year marks the Northville Victorian Festival’s twenty-fifth anniversary, and the Chamber of Commerce has selected as a theme:
The Gold Rush, an age-old quest at the core of our national character.
In many ways, Captain John Sutter was a familiar figure on the nineteenth century frontier. An immigrant seeking his fortune in the New World, he spent ten years securing investors from Alaska to Hawaii. Eventually, he settled in Mexico’s northern state of California during her war with the United States. Ten days before that real estate became US territory, Sutter’s construction foreman showed him gold nuggets from the race of his sawmill. Unable to keep the news secret, Sutter’s dream of an agricultural empire on the American River was overwhelmed by a flood of fortune seekers.
The Northville Historical Society and Mill Race Village will be offering a wide array of activities for young and old to enhance the enjoyment of this annual festival. During the next few weeks, we will highlight these activities on our Facebook page to help assure everyone is aware of these fun opportunities.
