"Grocery Grab" Benefits Gleaners Community Food Bank

AT&T teams up with Hiller's Market to provide 21,000 meals for people served by Gleaners.

A truckload of food - enough to feed 21,000 families - was donated to Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan Thursday, courtesy of a donation made through AT&T on behalf of media partners who participated in a “Grocery Grab” benefit for non-profit on Wednesday.

Five teams of local media personalities raced a 3-minute clock during three “Grocery Grab” events. The goal was to collect non-perishables for the food bank and raise awareness about the need for emergency food donations this holiday season.

Hiller’s Market, which as locations in West Bloomfield, Plymouth and Northville, hosted the events at its Commerce Township store.

Participants included Jamie Edmonds of WDIV-TV, Jennifer Bisram of WXYZ-TV, Edward Cardenas, of WWJ-AM radio, the Detroit Free Press Food Writer and Food Editor, Susan Selasky and Holly Griffin, respectively, and the Oakland Press Community Engagement Editor, Monica Drake and reporter, Paul Kampe.

Omari Taylor, director of community relations for Gleaners, said events like this help raise awareness about the importance of giving to the community, especially during the holiday season. He said AT&T’s $7,000 donation will go a long way in providing much-needed meals.
