In Brief: City of Northville to Seek Brownfield Redevelopment Grant

The city council passed a resolution to apply for the grant, which would be used for clean-up of the future site of the Garage restaurant.

Northville’s city council approved a resolution Monday night to pursue a state-awarded Brownfield Redevelopment grant for clean-up at the site of the future .

City manager Patrick Sullivan said in an interview Tuesday that the city will now seek $250,000 in funds to build what is called a vapor intrusion barrier at 202 W. Main St. He explained that because the site was used for dry cleaning at one point, that the barrier is needed to block chemicals in the soil.

The grant application will be submitted to the State of Michigan’s Department of Environmental Quality.

“The MDEQ offers grants to clean up contaminated sites that can be used for economic development purposes. The grants have to go through a governmental agency that must administer the project and the grant record keeping,” according to city documents.

The Yeoman Group of Northville would be used to “do most of the up-front work on the cleanup plan and grant application." And if the grant is approved, the Yeomen Group will prepare bid specifications for the project, according to city documents.
