In a rare lacrosse occurrence, Northville Goalie Alex Justice went 100 yards to score an unassisted goal in Saturday's LAX contest between the Northville Mustangs and the highly rated squad from Clarkston. The goal, late in the contest, brought a welcome bright spot to everyone present. During the post game press conference, Coach Greg Durham chuckled when asked about the final goal. "It was a work of art," he said with a smile, "Justice raced across the field, brushed off several Clarkston defenders, and fired a laser into the back of the net. And even better", he added with a wink, "Alex was able to cleverly disguise the shot as a pass to fool the opposing goalie. Brilliant, just brilliant!"
Since Clarkston's field was deemed unplayable, Saturday's game was held at Catholic Central High on another brisk day. Unlike the Mustang's previous three games, however, at least it was dry. Clarkston, one of the top 5 programs in the state this season, roared out to a fast start. They dominated the first period to lead 7-0. After what was apparently an inspirational sideline speech between quarters, the Mustangs awoke and played well for the remainder of the game. The final three periods were a delight to watch as both teams fought for every ground ball and the action was fast and furious. Although the final score was 14-7, Coach Durham was pleased at the effort against such a tough squad.
"We intentionally set up a really challenging schedule for our squad early each year to try and maximize our development, and the lessons we can learn from adversity." Durham said, "and though it is hard for the kids now, we expect them to grow and learn so that we can compete with anybody in the state by tournament time." "I was happy about how we responded to getting punched early today. We pulled ourselves up and competed like champions. Stick with us," he added, "we'll get there!"
