Science Olympiad has led a revolution in science education. It is one of the nation’s most prestigious science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) competitions. There are 211 middle schools and 198 high schools with more than 7000 students in Michigan State, and more than 250000 students nationwide participated this year. National tournament brings 60 winning middle school and 60 winning high school teams advancing from state-level competitions.

Meads Mill Science Olympiad team won Michigan State Champion on April 30 at MSU, E. Lansing, represent Michigan state to compete at national tournament along with 2nd placed team from Lakeshore Middle School.

There are 23 events or categories in middle school (Div. B) level this school year: https://www.soinc.org/2016_div_b_events. The program attracts many young “Engineers”, “Doctors”, and “Scientists” in biological, earth science, chemistry, physics …

Parents with various background and expertise were helping to coach these events, students were motivated to learn and had fun. Invitational tournament was their playground through sample tests and operate their building devices when competing with other schools. Regional champion to put the team with confidence to win at state. It is the 5th year in a row that Meads Mill team won the state champions and top at national: 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016.

The building events could bring the students joyful cheers or heartbroken tears: a well performed glider would rest on the gym hanging net/roof truss before glide down; a well calibrated Air Trajectory ball would barely miss the target bucket; a windy day would blow a great bottle rocket landing on a nearby building roof to be ranked after all others; a perfectly designed bridge under- performed its efficiency of load to its mass ratio; an “egg-cellence” scrambler vehicle carries an egg hit the barrier wall; a series of 18 simple machines (levers, screws, incline planes, wheel & axles, pulleys and wedges) to form a Rube Goldberg®-like device becomes Mission Impossible! … …

Days of Planning, Weeks of Building, Months of Perfecting, and Seconds of Crushing”. One could never tell what would end up at Science Olympiad competition.

COACH ME and I will learn; CHALLENGE ME and I will grow; BELIEVE IN ME and I will WIN” is the quote from Dr. Robert Halgren, Michigan Science Olympiad Site Coordinator.

Congratulations to Meads Mill Science Olympiad Team.

You are Amazing, Beyond Amazing!

You are Incredible, Unbelievable Incredible!

We wish our Olympiads bright future in Science!
