On what was a relatively balmy evening for 2014 LAX, the mighty Mustangs from Northville overpowered the Salem Rocks on their senior night, 12-8. Northville, playing without two of their top scorers due to injuries, Brennan Sweeney and Jake Fuller, started slowly. The Stangs led 4-2 after the 1st period but kept chipping away at the Rocks to take a 6-3 halftime lead. Senior John Cooke, starting to find his groove after a long early season injury layoff, scored two of his game leading 4 goals in the early going to set the tone.
Although Salem made a third period charge to narrow the score to a single goal at 8-7, Coach Greg Durham called timeout and made it clear to his squad that they were not to be out hustled henceforth. Taking his cue, the Mustangs exploded for three quick goals, and locked down on defense to effectively put the game out of reach. Our sideline reporter caught Coach Durham as he was heading to the locker room. "We have been playing very well lately," he said, but added, " it is human nature for teams to relax a bit when they are on a hot streak. It is our job as a coaching staff to do whatever we can to keep them from these lapses. Tonight, I just had to remind them that there are always consequences for letdowns.....and they don't like my consequences."
Regular readers will note that sometimes bloggers suffer mid-season lapses as well....especially on Late night games before mulch days. This scribe begs the reader's indulgence since tomorrow is a huge day for Northville LAX. See you early in the morning. GO MUSTANGS!
