The Northville Mustangs went hunting in the Jungle (South Lyon Gym) tonight and bagged the Lions 47-40. It was not an easy task, however, as the South Lyon team fought to the end. Actually, the Lions opened the game on an 11-2 run and looked firmly in control with only 6 minutes gone in the game. The Mustangs didn't back down though and narrowed the gap to 7-11 by quarter's end. The 2nd quarter was a different story though, as the Stangs shook off their jet lag and stormed back with an impressive 17-7 period to go into the half with a 24-18 lead.
Northville settled in for the second half, winning the 3rd quarter 11-7 to take a 10 point margin into the final period. As expected, the Lions made one final run to try and get back in the game, but this wasn't the Mustangs first rodeo, and they calmly turned away the charge and iced the game to go to 10-5 on the season and 7-2 in the tough Central Division of the KLAA.
Andrew Meacham started slowly, but started rolling mid-2nd quarter. He finished with 19 points and 14 rebounds to become the leading candidate for KLAA player of the week honors. Junior Nathan Kellum had his best game so far, scoring 9 critical points including the game clinching two handed dunk late in the 4th period. As is becoming the norm with this Mustang squad, everybody contributed to the victory tonight. Coach Todd Sander, tired after relentlessly working the sidelines to urge on his team, was satisfied. "We are really starting to take shape as a unit," he offered to the assembled press, "our seniors are leading the way, and our underclassmen are following suit. We are preparing ourselves for an exciting end to the season."
Once again, Northville was well represented by fans of all ages. The Maniacs were out tonight with their usual repertoire of inspiring cheers. "Those students are so creative and fun to watch," commented super fan Rita Furdak, "almost as good as watching the team. These games are the best show in town. Go Mustangs!"
Our entire program continued the streak.....again sweeping the night with wins by Freshman, Junior Varsity, and Varsity teams. Next action is Friday night as the Mustangs return to the Stable to face a resurgent South Lyon East squad. A win cements a great tournament draw. Friday is a big night. Our annual Coaches vs. Cancer program will be featured. The team has been fund raising at school all week for this important cause, but they would appreciate any donations on Friday night. Also, it is Senior night, with all the senior players and their parents being recognized.
The gym should be rocking, come out and join the fun!
