Travel Alert: 90-Vehicle Pile-Up Closes Interstate

If you're traveling to western Michigan, plan on delays and detours after a fatal 90-vehicle pile-up involving semis.

Both lanes of a section I-94 in western Michigan were closed Friday after a chaotic 90-vehicle pileup that claimed one life and caused 40,000 pounds of fireworks one of the truckers involved was hauling to spontaneously launch.

WWMT-TV reports the crash occurred between Mile Markers 90 and 92 in the eastbound lane of traffic, but both lanes between Mile Markers 85 (Galesburg exit) and 92 (M-37/Mercury Drive) will remain closed for an extended period of time, police said.

One of the drivers involved said the snow was heavy and “you couldn’t see a single thing” when one of the trucks in front of him “started to go crazy.”

“I was able to pull off and just watch semi after semi and semi and semi hit each other and cars hit each other. I mean people were going full speed ahead,” Micah Stanislowski, told the television station.

At least a half dozen people were injured. One of the other semi trucks involved was carrying hazardous fuel, and because of the number of fires burning at the scene, people are being asked to get out of their cars and move as far back as possible to await for buses that will take them to warm shelter nearby.
