Wayne County Prosecutor Declines to Press Charges in Fatal 8 Mile Accident

The accident was the likely result of a medical condition, officials say.

The driver of an SUV that struck and killed a 45-year-old South Lyon man will not be charged in the accident – which police believe was caused by a medical condition, according to a press release from the Northville Township Police Department.

The accident occurred at 1:39 p.m. on March 6 when 48-year-old Robert Dewhirst of Belleville veered to the right while traveling westbound on Eight Mile Road west of Beck Road. According to police reports, he then over-corrected to his left and jumped the center line on the two-lane road.

He then struck the SUV driven by Bowman, with his daughter in the back seat. He was taken to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital and was pronounced dead. His 12-year-old daughter was treated for minor injuries and released, according to the press release.
