Event Underscores Dangers of Texting and Driving

We've all heard the warnings about the dangers of texting and driving -- not to mention that it's illegal.

Now Hebrew Memorial Chapel is holding a "Don't Text and Drive" event this Saturday at Paradise Park to show teens what a dangerous combination this is.

Teens are invited to head to the go-kart track, to drive and text as the Novi Police Department oversees the action. They'll be given specific phrases to text while driving, and then maneuver the same course without texting. Afterwards the results will be compared, and teens will be judged on accuracy, speed, message sent and how many flags they hit. The goal is to show the differences between distracted driving and paying attention behind the wheel.

To participate, teens must own cell or smart phones and be willing to text for this competition. They'll also need parental permission to participate.
