As part of their FLL project, 5 kids from Novi Meadows researched on algae blooms affecting fish habitat in the lakes and ponds. They visited Lake Erie center and spoke with professionals doing research on algae blooms and also the Fishery center to understand the issues with fish habitat. They understood that the nutrients in the water runoffs from golf course,farm land, lawns etc affects the algae bloom. They conducted a survey and found out that people are not aware of harmful algae bloom and also when to apply the fertilizer. They came up with a solution to put a label on the fertilizer packets which shows the Right source, right time, right rate and the right place and also a label in the fertilizer section in the department stores so people are aware of when and how to use the fertilizer to minimize the runoff. They presented the same to the Novi community.
