Novi Woman Finalist in Passion For Fashion Sewing Challenge at the American Sewing Expo

Sarah Kolis of Novi, Mich. is a “Passion For Fashion Sewing Challenge” finalist at the 22nd annual American Sewing Expo, Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi, Friday, Sept. 25 through Sunday, Sept. 27.

Reality sewing television competitions are the inspiration for the “Passion for Fashion Sewing Challenge,” sponsored by Baby Lock, that has 12 finalists designing and sewing garments on Friday and Saturday, judged during a fashion show on Saturday and displayed on Sunday (similar to Lifetime’s Project Runway).

The contestants are from Georgia, Illinois, Michigan and North Carolina. First place receives a Baby Lock Aria sewing machine; second place receives a Baby Lock Imagine serger and third place receives a Baby Lock Anna Jane sewing machine. Baby Lock is providing the same machines for audience door prizes.

“Discover the latest looks and trends for sewing, fashion and quilting from apparel and costume designers, art quilt makers and teaching professionals featured at the fashion shows, classes and exhibits,” said Janet Pray, show producer of the largest independent consumer sewing show in the country. “Mothers, daughters, sisters, friends, beginners and experts will experience ‘sew’ much creativity at the hands-on projects, demonstrations and crafter do-it-yourself programs.”

Featured celebrities and show instructors include art quilter and designer Luke Haynes, optical illusion quilt designer Kathleen Andrews, cosplay designer Kristie Good, Simplicity Patterns costume pattern designer Andrea Schewe, fashion sewing expert from “It’s Sew Easy TV” Angela Wolf, Baby Lock’s Love of Fashion national spokes-designer Joi Mahon and Janome educator and modern quilter Latifah Saafir.

The show features sewing machines, sergers, machine embroidery, fabrics and supplies, embellishments, drafting, fitting, accessories, notions, threads, patterns, yarn, technology, kits, gadgets, embroidery designs, tools and other products and accessories for fashion sewing, quilting, costuming, needle arts, home decorating and wearable and fiber arts. Showgoers will see exhibits, fashion-style shows and live sewing challenge competitions or can attend seminars, classes and workshops.

Attendees can learn tips and techniques at make-n-take projects in vendor displays and as they sew their own project to take home at the Sew Party Café sponsored by Country Stitches and the Interactive Sewing Area sponsored by Janome.

The “Innovation Generation Fashion Show Competition,” sponsored by Baby Lock and Coats & Clark, will be held on Saturday for 8 to 18 year olds who know the sewing process and have made their own garments. Entries are prejudged and then worn by the contestants on the Expo Fashion Stage. Attendees can participate in the Costume Contest Fashion Show on Sunday. A Dream Sewing Room, sponsored by Janome and Gall Sewing and Vacuum Centers of Michigan, will be given away on Sunday.

Special display exhibits and events will include Fashion Design in 1/2 Scale “50 Shades of Red” Challenge sponsored by Baby Lock and Islander Sewing Systems; American & Efird “Push the Envelope-Tassels, Textures and Trims” contest; “Chic Batik – The Challenge” sponsored by Island Batik and Superior Threads; “Quilted in Michigan;” fashion sewing; wearable art; ask the designer, prizes and costume making tips in the Social Media Lounge; and gifts for the first 100 show attendees each day.

“Show visitors can learn to quilt or sew, test-drive sewing machines and get creative tips at this year’s show,” said Pray. “Everyone will be inspired by ‘sew’ many possibilities to learn new crafts, brush up on techniques and find out how the experts do it at this year’s show.”

Suburban Collection Showplace is located at 46100 Grand River Avenue between Novi and Beck Road in Novi, Michigan. Show hours are 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. Friday; 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Sunday. Preshow workshops are 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 23 and Thursday, Sept. 24. Expo admission is $14 and children 15 and under are admitted free with a paying adult. One-hour seminars are $14, all-day workshops are $130 and special combination packages are available.
