Man Charged In Random Oakland County Shooting, Carjacking: Prosecutor

ORION TOWNSHIP, MI — A 25-year-old Ann Arbor man is facing charges in connection with a random Oakland County shooting and carjacking earlier this week, according to prosecutors.

Mauriel Dashawn Hearn was charged with carjacking, assault with intent to murder, fleeing a police officer, resisting a police officer, carrying a concealed weapon and three counts of felony firearm.

If convicted, he faces up to life in prison for the carjacking and assault with intent to murder charges.

The incident happened at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday near the Old Navy store in the Baldwin Commons Plaza in Orion Township, officials said.

Officials said Hearn was sitting outside the store and watching for a victim. They said he eventually approached a woman, who was with her young son, and demanded her car keys.

Hearn then shot the woman in the hip during the confrontation and took her keys and sped away from the parking lot, officials said.

The woman, who is in her 40s, was taken to a nearby hospital where she is expected to be ok, officials said.

Officers used the department’s FLOCK camera system to track the car and found it heading north, officials said.

Officers tried stopping the car, but Hearn sped away, reaching over 100 miles per hour before striking a guardrail in Groveland Township, officials said.

He then got out of the car and ran away on foot but was later captured by officers, officials said.

"The victims, a mother and her young child, should never have been placed in this dangerous situation because I believe this defendant should be behind bars for previous crimes," Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald said. "My priority is always public safety. As prosecutors, we have a responsibility to protect the public from violent individuals like the defendant in this case. If we lose sight of that, bad things can happen to good people. I look forward to working with law enforcement to hold this defendant accountable and protect our communities."
