ORION TOWNSHIP, MI — An Oakland County worker was injured in a trench collapse Wednesday, according to sheriff's officials.
The incident happened at 9:41 a.m. Wednesday at the southeast corner of Squirrel and Silverbell roads in Orion Township, officials said.
It's the second trench collapse in the county within 24 hours. Officials said a 35-year-old Ira Township man was rescued after he was buried during a trench collapse at a construction site in Oxford Township.
Excavation crews were digging at the new subdivision site to prepare for the installation of a sanitary sewer line, officials said.
The surrounding ground gave away during the digging, trapping a 25-year-old worker below the waist in the trench, officials said.
Officials said the worker was inside a trench box.
Coworkers and first responders were able to safely free the man before the specialized rescue teams arrived, officials said.
The emergency response call was canceled, but the worker was taken to McLaren Oakland Hospital with injuries to his lower extremities, officials said.
He was listed in stable condition, officials said.
The Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) responded to the site and is investigating.
