Orion Assembly and the General Motors Foundation Support Lake Orion Through Grants to Local Organizations

LAKE ORION, Mich.:  Monday, with the help of Orion Assembly, the General Motors Foundation  presented $50,000 to support organizations within the Lake Orion community that provide services and benefits for local families.

In total, the GM Foundation will provide more than $1 million in funding to nearly 200 organizations in 43 plant cities where GM employees live and work. Through these grants, the GM Foundation is building stronger communities and enriching the lives of our neighbors.

“The communities that our employees and their families call home are important to the General Motors Foundation,” said Vivian Pickard, President, GM Foundation.  “The grants that we provide benefit education, community centers, cultural organizations and many other important areas of focus that strengthen and improve these communities.”

The General Motors Foundation grant will support the following local organizations:

• Oakland Livingston Human Service Agency
• Boys and Girls Clubs of Southeastern Michigan – Pontiac and Orion/Oxford Clubs
• Clinton River Watershed Council
• CARE House of Oakland County

The grants will make possible activities ranging from opportunities for low-income, elderly, and persons with disabilities to become more self-sufficient to a continuum of quality care for children who are the victims of child abuse and neglect.  In addition, the funding will support educational programs for youth over the summer.

“Many of the children who come to Boys and Girls Clubs are from economically disadvantaged circumstances, and need a safe, structured and supportive environment in which to learn and have fun during their school vacation,” said Troy Stevens, Pontiac Club Director and recipient of a grant.  “We express our thanks to the GM Foundation for giving us the opportunity to continue operating our summer program, which benefits more than 1,000 local youth.” 

The General Motors Foundation grants made across the country are given to a wide-variety of organizations that families rely on to provide much needed services, improve education and impact the quality of life within their respective communities. The grants to these organizations and institutions will make these communities even greater places to work, live and grow.

In addition to the 2012 grants to totaling more than $1 million, the GM Foundation also granted $1 million to nonprofit organizations in plant cities in 2011.  The General Motors Foundation’s commitment continues as it works, in conjunction with employees, local leaders and community groups to continue to identify areas of need.
