Ann Arbor fire officials do not know what caused the explosion that led to the fire.

ANN ARBOR, MI — A woman was killed in a Monday morning apartment fire that was caused by some kind of explosion, fire officials said.
Firefighters responded to a blaze at the Baker Commons, located at 106 Packard, after multiple reports of a fire and possible explosion, officials said.
Firefighters said the blaze started on the second floor and pulled one woman from the unit, official said.

Firefighters extinguished the fire in roughly 30 minutes, officials said.
The building's fire sprinkler system, which are located in the building's hallways, prevented the blaze from spreading, officials said.
The blaze was limited to just one single apartment unit, officials said.
Other than the woman who died in the fire, there were no other injuries, officials said.
Officials said there was some sort of explosion in the unit prior to the fire, but officials do not know what caused that fire, especially since the apartment units do not have natural gas and the building’s natural gas feed was not involved with the explosion or fire.
Eight other apartment units had smoke and water damage due to the fire, officials said.
The City of Ann Arbor Housing Commission is providing sheltering assistance to the residents whose homes were damaged in the fire, officials said.
Ann Arbor officials were still investigating the fire.
