12 Things To Do in the D in May (Besides Detroit Tigers Baseball, A Given)

May is a perfect month to shake off the winter blues. There is something going on nearly every day in and around the D.

Of course, a Detroit Tigers game is always a good bet, and there are several homestands you won’t want to miss, starting with the the Kansas City Royals, May 8-10; Minnesota Twins, May 12-14; Milwaukee Brewers, May 18-19; and Houston Astros, May 22-24.

  1. Detroit Restaurant Week, May 1-10: Get a three-course dinner for $30 per person. Various locations.
  2. Cinco de Mayo, May 5: Check your local community calendars for events near you, but great Mexican food can be found at El Barzon, Taqueria El Rey, Alley Taco, or any of the other fine establishments on this list. Various locations.
  3. Bob Dylan at the Fox Theatre, May 15: The songwriter said in 2013 a CBS “60 Minutes” that he made a “bargain” with the “chief commander” on this Earth and the world that can’t be seen that he would continue doing shows in perpetuity. Still, you should see him while you can still understand him. Fox Theatre, Detroit
  4. Motor City Comic Con, May 15-17: There’s so much going on, from movie screenings to noteworthy appearances from several cast members of The Walking Dead; Katey Sagal and Ryan Hurst from Sons of Anarchy; and the original Karate Kid, Ralph Macchio. Suburban Collection Showplace, Novi.
  5. Jerry Seinfeld at the Fox Theatre, May 16: The master of observational comedy still has it. This top-notch show promises not to be about nothing. Fox Theatre, Detroit
  6. Kevin Hart at The Palace, May 16: Kevin Hart is one of the hottest comedians around right now, and he’s scheduled for two show. The Palace, Auburn Hills.
  7. Tequila Mundo, May 17: Tequila pushes Michigan’s craft beers and spirits and takes center stage at this event, featuring more than 60 different tequilas, prompting Thrillist to say: “I should have way more tequila in my life.” Royal Oak Farmers Market
  8. Belle Isle Bike Tour, May 22: Wheelhouse Detroit sponsors this Belle Isle cruise, during which you can learn about Belle Isle gems like the aquarium; the conservatory; and Alpheus Starkey Williams and his beloved horse, Plug Ugly. Belle Isle
  9. Dinosauria, May 22-Sept. 7: The Detroit Zoo’s animatronic dinosaur exhibit opens for an almost four-month run. Detroit Zoo
  10. Movement Electronic Music Festival, May 23-25: Grab your neon and Lycra and learn more about where electronic music originated. Yet-to-be announced are official and non-official after-parties. Hart Plaza
  11. Belle Isle Grand Prix, May 25-29: Forget Indy. Detroit is the Motor City, and it will show during this five-day event. If you don’t like races, you’ll find concerts by 3 Doors Down and Smash Mouth on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Belle Isle
  12. Taylor Swift at Ford Field, May 30: Take your 12-year-old to this concert and you might learn something about yourself: You sort of love Taylor Swift. It’s all good. Ford Field
