Suspected Canton Shooter Arrested In Illinois, Woman Also Arrested By Police

Two people were arrested in connection to a fatal shooting that happened in June along Haggerty Road in Canton, police said.

CANTON, MI — Two people were arrested in connection to a fatal shooting that happened in June along Haggerty Road in Canton, police said.

Maria Phillips, 33, was arrested June 16 and charged with accessory after the fact to a felony in connection with the June 10 shooting. She is being held in the Wayne County Jail on a $500,000 cash bond.

On July 7, police also arrested the person believed to be the shooter in Illinois on a homicide warrant. The suspected shooter will be extradited back to Michigan to face charges, police said.

Police said a 37-year-old man from Belleville was shot multiple times while driving on Haggerty Road between Palmer Road and Michigan Avenue on June 10, police said. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he died.

Police said the shooter was in a gray 2013-2017 Chevrolet Equinox when he opened fire. Police were also looking for a newer white Dodge Ram pickup truck with black trim.

Police also believe road rage may have contributed to the shooting.
