70 Percent of Michiganders Oppose Guns in Schools: Poll

The statewide poll comes as Michigan lawmakers are considering legislation that would allow concealed weapons in schools.

A new statewide poll shows by a nearly 70 percent margin that Michigan residents with concealed pistol licenses should not be allowed to carry their guns in schools, colleges and universities, and daycare and early childhood care centers.

The EPIC-MRA survey of 600 likely general election voters, commissioned by the Michigan Coalition to Prevent Gun Violence, was conducted Oct. 25-31. The margin of error is plus or minus 4 percentage points.

The poll comes as Michigan lawmakers are considering legislation that would close a loophole in the state law and allow people with CPLs to carry their guns in schools.

Both Democrats and Republicans oppose guns in school: 86 percent of Democrats oppose guns in schools, compared with 55 percent of Republicans. Among gun advocates, 52 percent of National Rifle Association and 58 percent of handgun owners oppose guns in schools.

“Taken together these and other survey results show that voters solidly oppose the underlying premise of a legislative proposal that presupposes public acceptance of firearms in schools by allowing people to conceal carry in exchange for banning people from openly carrying guns into schools,” EPIC-MRA said in a news release.

A 61 to 33 percent majority said they agree (45 percent strongly) with the statement that “the only guns that should be allowed in schools, colleges, universities, daycare centers and early childhood centers are the guns that are carried by law enforcement and school security officials, and the Legislature should only pass laws that prohibit people from bringing any weapons into schools, regardless of how they are carried,” EPIC-MRA said.
