Nitric Acid Spilled Onto I-94 In Ann Arbor After Semi Truck Crash: Official

ANN ARBOR, MI — A semi-truck crash caused a massive chemical spill along Interstate 94 in Ann Arbor on Thursday morning, according to fire officials.

The crash happened at 12:10 a.m. on westbound Interstate 94 near Jackson Road in Ann Arbor, according to fire officials.

Officials said the semi-truck driver struck the median wall, sending concrete debris into the eastbound lanes that caused several other crashes.

There were no injuries, but officials said a 55-gallon drum containing 38 percent nitric acid ruptured and scattered its contents across the freeway.

The Washtenaw County Hazardous Materials Response Team responded to the scene to conduct assessment and atmospheric monitoring.

They used sodium bicarbonate to safely neutralize the acid. There is no further risk to the public, officials said.

The eastbound lanes in the area have reopened, but the westbound lanes were still closed as crews continued cleaning up.
