Metro Detroit Dentist Charged In Medicaid Fraud Scheme

A metro Detroit dentist is facing dozens of charges in connection with a Medicaid fraud scheme, officials said.

LIVONIA, MI — A metro Detroit dentist is facing dozens of charges in connection with a Medicaid fraud scheme, according to Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel.

Demetra C. Kazanis, 55, of Northville, was charged with one count of conducting a criminal enterprise (up to 20-year felony) and 42 counts of Medicaid fraud (up to 4-year felony).

She was placed in jail with a $50,000 bond. Her next court date is scheduled for June 5.

Kazanis was practicing at New You Dental clinic in Livonia where officials said she repeatedly billed the Medicaid program for fillings that were either not performed or were performed as less invasive preventive resin restorations (PRRs).

PRRs involve treatment limited to the tooth’s enamel surface that does not require drilling into the dentin or the use of anesthesia, unlike fillings, which are more extensive procedures reimbursed by Medicaid at a higher rate.

Officials did not release any other details.

"Abuse of the Medicaid program diverts critical funds from those in need," Nessel said. "Patients should be able to trust their dentist to provide appropriate care, just as taxpayers should be able to trust Medicaid providers to bill honestly. My Department remains committed to prosecuting fraudsters who exploit the system."
