LIVONIA, MI — Officers shot and killed a man after a home explosion and fire in Livonia on Sunday night, according to police.
The incident happened at 7 p.m. at a home in the 20000 block of St. Francis Street, according to police.
Officials responded to the home, which had caught fire after an explosion, according to police.
Firefighters extinguished the fire and searched the home, and confirmed the home was empty, according to police.
Officials then located the homeowner, who was armed with a handgun, in a neighbor's backyard, according to police.
Officials tried negotiating with the man, but police said he raised his handgun toward the officers.
That's when an officer fired a shot, fatally striking the 61-year-old man, according to police.
No officers were injured in the shooting, according to police.
It was unclear what caused the house explosion.
Police did not release any other details as the investigation continues.
