Woman Hit, Killed On M-14 Near Ann Arbor: Police

ANN ARBOR, MI — A woman was killed Sunday after she was hit by a car on Michigan 14 in Ann Arbor, according to Michigan State Police.

The incident happened at 11 p.m. Sunday in the westbound lanes on Michigan 14 near Wagner Road, according to police.

The 45-year-old Ann Arbor woman was a passenger inside a Ford Explorer that was being driven by her friend, a 32-year-old Ann Arbor woman, according to police.

The two women, who had just left a restaurant where they both consumed alcohol, started arguing inside the SUV while moving on Michigan 14, according to police.

The older woman demanded to be let out of the vehicle and opened the door while it was still moving on the freeway, according to police.

The driver then pulled onto the right shoulder and the 45-year-old woman exited the SUV, according to police.

She then ran into the westbound lanes where she was hit by a Jeep Compass that a 45-year-old Ann Arbor man was driving, according to police.

The man stayed at the scene, initially believing he had struck a deer, according to police.

The 32-year-old woman who was driving the Ford Explorer checked on her friend, saw that she had died, and then left the scene in her SUV, according to police.

Officials arrived and found the 45-year-old woman dead in the roadway, according to police.

Investigators determined the driver of the Jeep Compass was not injured and not under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Troopers later located the woman's friend, who was driving the Ford Explorer. She told investigators that she "panicked" and left the scene.

Investigators determined that she had been operating the vehicle while intoxicated. They will submit a report to the Washtenaw County Prosecutor's Office.

The 32-year-old woman could face OWI and leaving the scene of a fatal traffic crash charges, according to police.
