Major Metro Detroit Hospital Announces Mass Layoff

The layoffs come as part of a restructuring plan.

LIVONIA, MI — Trinity Health will permanently lay off 557 workers from its Livonia hospital as part of a restructuring plan.

The layoffs will start on Oct. 26 and run through Nov. 29, according to a notice filed with the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO).

The largest affected position is the "Service Desk Support I," which will see 49 roles eliminated, according to the WARN notice.

The notice also listed other internal technology support services jobs, but not any clinical, patient-facing roles.

The job cuts come just a few months after Trinity Health announced plans to outsource its IT department to a company with "deep expertise in modern technology infrastructure and service delivery."

"The pace and complexity of health care technology are accelerating. Sustaining that pace is increasingly difficult for any single organization on its own. A partner whose core business is technology support gives us access to specialized expertise and innovation at the speed and scale health care now requires while strengthening service reliability," hospital officials said in their June announcement.
