The leaves are changing colors - but how much do you know about the trees that make living in Michigan every fall such a colorful experience?
Local residents will have a chance to learn more by coming to Miller Woods, Plymouth's own forest nature preserve, for a guided tour with volunteer tree experts on two upcoming Sunday afternoons.
Tours will be offered on the afternoons of Sunday, October 18 and 25, starting every 30 minutes between 2 and 4 p.m.
Tours will take about 60 minutes to travel the one-third mile loop trail through the historic 10-acre patch of old-growth forest. The unpaved trail does include some varied terrain including tree roots, but is mostly flat.
The tours are free and open to all, with donations accepted to help with trail maintenance and to help keep invasive species out of the nature preserve. Miller Woods includes some trees that are hundreds of years old.
More information can be found at https://www.millerwoods.com/tours.html . If any adjustments to the tour dates or times are needed at the last minute because of weather, they will be posted on the Miller Woods Facebook page at facebook.com/millerwoodsplymouthmi .
Those who can't make it for a guided tour are welcome to stop by Miller Woods between dawn and dusk any day to see the fall colors on their own. Some trees are labeled for identification.
The entrance to Miller Woods is on Powell Road between Ridge and Beck Roads in Plymouth Township. Look for the sign.
Park along the road, and please leave bikes and strollers outside the fence. Please also leave dogs at home.
The Friends of Miller Woods can take requests for guided tours from classes, clubs and Scout troops, and welcomes volunteer help from families and groups. To join the Friends with a donation of $25 or more, visit the website.
