CANTON, MI — Five undocumented immigrants, including an individual who had a final order of removal, were arrested in an ICE operation near a Canton elementary school earlier this week, an ICE spokesperson told Patch.
The incident happened around 10 a.m. Tuesday near Hulsing Elementary School, which is between Morton Taylor and Lilley roads, according to police.
The spokesperson said ICE agents approached six individuals who ran away from the officers toward the school.
Canton police cordoned off Hulsing Elementary School and placed the school under a shelter-in-place, while the ICE operation was carried out.
The arrests happen roughly a quarter mile away from the school. They did not happen on school property and no ICE agents entered the school, according to the spokesperson.
ICE officials did not release any other details about the arrests.
The shelter-in-place at the elementary school lasted for just over an hour without incident, according to police.
Police said neither the department nor the school district had knowledge of the ICE enforcement activity in the area.
