Grandfather Dies, Child Rescued From MI Lake After Kayak Capsizes: Police

Police said the 69-year-old man was kayaking with his grandson on a Washtenaw County lake before the kayak overturned in the water.

NORTHFIELD TOWNSHIP, MI — A 69-year-old Ann Arbor man died Tuesday morning after his kayak overturned while on a Washtenaw County lake with his grandson, according to Northfield Township Police.

Officials found the 3-year-old in Horseshoe Lake, which is near US-23 and 6 Mile Road, shortly before 11 a.m., but they were unable to find the 69-year-old man, police said.

It was not immediately clear who saved the child.

After an hour-long search, officials found the man dead in roughly 21 feet of water using sonar, police said.

Police said investigators were still looking into the incident, and the man’s body has been turned over to the medical examiner’s office to determine an exact cause of death.

"The hearts of the entire Washtenaw and Livingston County's first responders go out to his family for their loss,” Northfield Township Police Chief Martin Smith said.
