Hospitalized Man Arrested In Deadly Canton Township Shooting: Police

A man was arrested in connection with the fatal shooting after he was hit by a car while running from a "previous incident," police said.

CANTON TOWNSHIP, MI — A hospitalized man, who was involved in a "pedestrian accident," was arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of a 19-year-old woman in Canton Township on Friday night, according to police.

Officers found the 19-year-old woman shot to death at roughly 9:30 p.m. at the Comfort Suites on Haggerty Road, near Ford Road, according to police. Police did not identify the woman.

Within an hour after the shooting, a 23-year-old man was struck twice by passing cars as he ran across the southbound Interstate 275 exit to Ford Road, according to Michigan State Police.

The first driver who hit the man stopped at the scene, but the second vehicle continued driving, according to Michigan State Police.

The man was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was listed in critical condition and arrested in connection with the fatal shooting at the Comfort Sites in Canton, according to police.

Police did not confirm if the man who was struck by the cars was the suspected shooter. But the crash happened a few hundred feet away from where the fatal shooting happened at the Comfort Sites in Canton.

Moreover, troopers said the 23-year-old man was running from a "previous incident."

Police said there was no threat to the community while officials were still investigating the shooting.

"The Canton Police Department extends its deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the victim during this difficult time," police said in a statement.
